Erik Battaglia ha iniziato nel 1986 la sua attività concertistica, interamente dedicata al Lied tedesco e alla musica vocale da camera. Del suo libro sui Goethe-Lieder Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau ha scritto: “Ciò che qui è stato creato non si può paragonare a nessuna trattazione puramente musicologica, poiché, contemporaneamente ad un così solido approccio storico ed analitico, fa sempre capolino il formidabile pianista accompagnatore e didatta, cui il lavoro pragmatico sull’imponderabile argomento assume le fattezze calorose d’una prova d’amore.” Accompagnatore italiano di Nicolai Gedda, con il grande tenore ha suonato Lieder e melodie del repertorio russo e francese. Ha suonato nelle più prestigiose sale europee (Musikverein Vienna, Unter den Linden Berlino, Radio France Parigi, La Monnaie Bruxelles, Staatsoper Hamburg, Teatro Coliseum Buenos Aires, ecc.) e per le migliori Società musicali italiane (Unione Musicale e MITO, Torino; Amici della Musica Perugia; Ferrara Musica, Accademia Chigiana Siena; Società Barattelli L’Aquila; Ravenna Festival; Amici della Musica di Palermo, ecc.). Nel 1999 ha ideato e diretto il Festival con l’esecuzione integrale dei Lieder di Richard Strauss, alla presenza e sotto il patronato del nipote del compositore, Christian Strauss. Dal 1994 forma un duo con il soprano Valentina Valente: insieme sono stati tra l’altro primi interpreti italiani di molte opere di Aribert Reimann, hanno inciso (Warner) l’opera omnia di Ermanno Wolf Ferrari e un CD di Goethe-Lieder di compositori italiani (Accademia di Santa Cecilia). Tra le altre sue incisioni (Warner Fonit): i cicli di Robert Schumann, le Canzoni di Tosti e una scelta di Canzoni di Respighi. Le sue Variazioni sopra un tema di Webern sono state eseguite dal Quartetto di Torino per l’Unione Musicale di Torino, così come le musiche di scena per lo spettacolo su Hugo Wolf. 1897 Opera Tarantella e Follia, ideato e realizzato nel 2014 con Olivia Manescalchi. Tra i progetti in corso (work in progress dal 2011) la prima esecuzione integrale dei Lieder di Schubert in Italia per l’Unione Musicale di Torino, con allievi della sua scuola e dei corsi internazionali in cui insegna. Continuatore dell’opera di divulgazione didattica del Lied tedesco iniziata da suo padre, Elio Battaglia, Erik Battaglia ha insegnato alla Scuola Superiore Hugo Wolf di Acquasparta sin dal 1987. È professore di Musica Vocale da Camera dal 1993, e dal 2000 ricopre questa cattedra presso il Conservatorio di Torino. Numerose Master Class in Italia e all’estero. Dal 2013 è docente presso la Deutsche Liedakademie di Trossingen, con corsi dedicati a Hugo Wolf e al Lied italiano. Nel 2012 (Berlino), 2013 (Vilnius) e 2014 (Berlino) è stato docente ospite del Liedforum organizzato da Axel Bauni per la Universität der Künste di Berlino. Nel 2016 sarà docente ospite presso il Conservatorio „G. Verdi“ di Milano per il Master di secondo livello in Musica Vocale da Camera. Affianca all’attività concertistica quella di musicologo; molti i saggi e i volumi pubblicati, tra cui: – Gioia e dolore diventano canto. 1000 Lieder su poesie di Goethe (Roma, Accademia di Santa Cecilia, 2008, con la prefazione di Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau). – I Lieder di Richard Strauss (Asti, Analogon, 2012, con la prefazione di Michael Kennedy) – I Lieder giovanili di Hugo Wolf (id., 2010, prefazione di Claus-Christian Schuster) – Il Libro dei Lieder. 1111 Traduzioni di testi di Lieder tedeschi. (id., 2014) – Liszt, the Song, Italy (in Franz Liszt: A Chorus of Voices, Pendragon Press, 2012) – Michelangelo in Musica (in Music se extendit a Omnia, Lim, 2007) Dal 2007 lavora alla cura e alla traduzione dell’opera omnia (musicologica e su Shakespeare) di Eric Sams (11 volumi pubblicati su 15, Analogon, 2007-). Ha tradotto inoltre opere di Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Eliot Slater, Gerald Moore, Hermann Bahr, Karl Kraus, Frank Wedekind, nonché la monumentale biografia di Frank Walker su Hugo Wolf. Di prossima pubblicazione un libro di sue conversazioni con Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau e un libro sui Lieder di Gustav Mahler. Ha fondato il Centro Studi Eric Sams (www.ericsams.org) per la divulgazione del Lied tedesco e la cura del monumentale lascito letterario dello studioso inglese, realizzando tra l’altro la prima edizione del volume incompiuto The Real Shakespeare II (il primo volume edito per Yale). Cura inoltre l’Archivio online dedicato all’opera dello psichiatra e studioso di Shakespeare Eliot Slater. Erik Battaglia fa parte del Honorary Advisory Board della Lyrica Society for Word-Music Relations di Harvard ed è stato membro corrispondente della Schubert Sociey di New York. Nel 2015 è stato membro della giuria del Concorso Internazionale di Lieder Paula Salomon-Lindbergh a Berlino.

Erik Battaglia is ord. Professor for Lied and Oratorio at the G. Verdi Conservatorium in Torino.  Since 2013 he is in the teaching staff of the Trossingen Deutsche Liedakademie. He began in 1986 his activity as concert pianist, entirely devoted to the German Lied and the Italian song repertoire. He has been the Italian accompanist of tenor Nicolai Gedda, and performed with him Lieder and Melodies from the Russian and French repertoire. He has given recitals throughout Italy and in some of the most prestigious European venues (Musikverein Wien, Staatsoper Berlin, Staatsoper Hamburg, La Monnaie Bruxelles, Paris Radio France, ecc.) as well as in the USA, Argentina and South Korea. In August 2003 he performed Hugo Wolf’s unfinished opera Manuel Venegas in Salzburg’s Wiener Saal. In 1999 he directed the Strauss Project, with the performance of all the songs by Richard Strauss with the patronage of Dr. Christian Strauss. He is currently organizing the first Italian performance of all the songs by Schubert in a work-in-progress festival at the Unione Musicale in Torino.

Since 1994 he plays in duo with soprano Valentina Valente. They recorded together (Warner Fonit) Wolf-Ferrari’s Canzoniere Italiano and a choice of Italian songs on poems by Goethe (Accademia di Santa Cecilia) and performed many Italian Uraufführungen of works by Aribert Reimann.

Erik Battaglia has written many essays and books on Lied-related topics (Gioia e dolore diventano canto – 1000 Lieder su poesie di Goethe, with a foreword by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Rome, Santa Cecilia 2008; I Lieder giovanili di Hugo Wolf, 2011; I Lieder di Richard Strauss, foreword by Michael Kennedy, 2012; Il libro dei Lieder. 1111 poesie tradotte, 2014, ecc.).

He is founder of the “Centro Studi Eric Sams” aimed to introduce students and readers to the works of his mentor, the late English musicologist and Shakespeare scholar, and he is currently translating and editing the complete works of Eric Sams in 15 volumes, as well as many other books on Lieder and Lied-interpretation (among others, the Frank Walker Wolf-biography and Fischer-Dieskau’s book on Wolf’s Mörike-Lieder).

Conservatory professor since 1993, Erik Battaglia joined the 2012-13 Liedforum in Berlin and Vilnius with students of his class and holds regularly Master Classes on German Lieder and Italian songs in Italy and abroad.

In 2015 he has taken part in the judging board of the Paula Salomon-Lindberg Lied competition in Berlin.

He is corresponding member of the Schubert Society of the USA, and joins the Honorary Advisory Board of the Lyrica Society for Word-Music Relations in Harvard.

Erik Battaglia ist Professor für Liedgestaltung am Konservatorium Giuseppe Verdi in Turin/Italien. Seit 2013 lehrt er auch im Rahmen der Deutschen Liedakademie Trossingen. Er begann 1986 seine Tätigkeit als Konzertpianist, überwiegend dem deutschen und italienischen Liedrepertoire gewidmet. Er war u.a. langjähriger Begleiter des Tenors Nicolai Gedda, mit dem er zudem russisches und französisches Liedrepertoire aufgeführt hat. Erik Battaglia begleitete Liederabende in den bedeutendsten europäischen Konzertsälen (Musikverein Wien, Staatsoper Berlin, Staatsoper Hamburg, La Monnaie Bruxelles, Paris Radio France, etc.), in den USA, Argentinien und Südkorea. Im Jahr 1999 leitete er ein Gesamtaufführungs-Projekt der Lieder von Richard Strauss, unter der Schirmherrschaft von Dr. Christian Strauss. Im August 2003 führte er Hugo Wolfs unvollendete Oper Manuel Venegas in Salzburg auf. Er ist momentan künstlerischer Leiter der ersten italienischen Gesamtaufführung aller Lieder von Franz Schubert im Rahmen eines Festivals an der Unione Musicale Turin.

Erik Battaglia hat zahlreiche Aufsätze und Bücher zu Lied-relevanten Themen geschrieben (z.B. Gioia e dolore diventano canto – 1000 Lieder su poesie di Goethe, mit einem Vorwort von Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Rom, Santa Cecilia 2008; Jugendlieder von Hugo Wolf, 2011; Die Lieder von Richard Strauss, Vorwort von Michael Kennedy 2012; Das Buch der Lieder – 1111 Liedtext-Übersetzungen 2014, ecc).

Er ist Gründer des “Centro Studi Eric Sams”, das Studierenden und Lesern die Arbeiten seines Mentors, des verstorbenen englischen Musikwissenschaftlers und Shakespeare-Forschers Eric Sams, zugänglich macht. Aktuell arbeitet Erik Battaglia an der Übersetzung und Neuausgabe des Gesamtwerks von Eric Sams in 15 Bänden, sowie an anderen Büchern über Lieder und Liedinterpretation (unter anderem an den Übersetzungen von Frank Walkers Hugo-Wolf-Biographie und Dietrich Fischer-Dieskaus Buch über Wolfs Mörike-Lieder).

Als Professor für Liedgestaltung seit 1993, war Erik Battaglia 2012/13 mit Studenten seiner Klasse beim den europäischen Liedforen in Berlin und Vilnius zu Gast. Er hält regelmäßig Meisterkurse in Italien und im Ausland. Im Jahr 2015 war er Jurymitglied beim Paula-Salomon-Lindberg-Liedwettbewerb in Berlin.

Erik Battaglia ist korrespondierendes Mitglied der Schubert Society der USA und gehört zum Ehrenbeirat der Lyrica Society for Word-Music Relations in Harvard.
